Gmenu2x for Dingux

Gmenu2x for Dingux!
January 31, 2010

Are you ready for some awesomeness? Joyrider has ported the gmenu2x front-end to dingux! This is much easier to use than dmenu, dinguxmb and the like. No need to edit config files etc when you add new programs to Dingux. There are also various skins/themes already available too.
(note - these first two screenshots are taken from Wiz/GP2X)

Quote from: Joyrider

i ported gmenu2x to dingux, it has all the features of the original gp2x menu working and I fixed 2 small bugs in the original code (dealing with new links that didn't show correctly). I also added battery reading and a LCD Backlight setting, made the volume changing work and a few other things. Gmenu2x also has various skins/themes already available.

a few notes :

the menu needs to be placed in /boot/local/gmenu2x (and no other place, the zip already contains the gmenu2x folder so just extract to /boot/local).

You'll also have to edit the /boot/local/sbin/main script if you want this to be your default menu !

the scanning feature looks for *.dge files, if you have games / applications with another extension you'll have to add it manually (in the menu itself, not through config files)

Asciiportal level pack

For those who like their action in words:

Asciiportal levelpack
Zear sends news about an Asciiportal level pack.

Quote from: Joseph Larson

Hey, since the map select is broken on the version you ported for the dingoo, and since I don't want anyone to miss out on the fun (heh) use this maps directory. It's every ASCIIpOrtal map to date. Unfortunately I haven't checked it for repeats or completability, but hey, not like anyones going to actually try to finish all 120 levels.

You can download this levelpack from the Dingoo File Archive

To install it simply replace your maps dir.

Sdlpal released

Funky Chinese RPG sdlpal has been released:

Zear has ported sdlpal - an SDL-based reimplemention of the classic Chinese-language RPG "The Legend of Sword and Fairy" (仙剑奇侠传), also known as "Chinese Paladin".

In order to run the game you need the original datafiles from the DOS version of the game.
There is an English patch for the game, but unfortunately it's for the win95 version and doesn't fully work with sdlpal (can't give a certain item to a NPC and thus leave the first location).
You can get the English translation here:

FSM for Dingux

Another menu option for Dingux:

FSM for Dingux Released

Darfgarf has released his new menu for Dingux!

alrighty then, this is a small fast menu that doesn't look too pretty at the moment, and lacks features like volume controls etc.

but you really should give it a go  Grin  it gives you a nice stable filebrowser to launch things from, along with being able to filter the current directory so that it only shows .dge and .sh files

oh and read the readme, it's there for a reason!

there would be a screenshot here, but i've had great troubles uploading things due to BT being crap and our phoneline going out in the snow, so you don't get one  Cheesy

Chui releases DCastaway for Dingux – Atari ST Emulator

Top Spanish coder Chui has released Dcastaway for Dingux, an Atari ST emulator. Direct link to download here, and more details here!

In september 2004 Chui & Ron decided to port of an Atari ST Emulator. We had this old 16-bit home computer and love it. We're finding emulators for other environments and two emulators were found using Simple Direct Layer: Castaway and Hatari.

Well, based originally in both emulators all code parts were re-written and optimized for Dreamcast, and DCaSTaway is the result of the effort done to bring to DC this excellent Atari ST emulator in 3 flavours, Dreamcast, Windows and GNU/Linux.

Throw me a frickkin’ Mini Micromenu

Hot (OK, lukewarm) off the presses at Dingoonity:

MicroMenu for Dingux
January 27, 2010

Vinicius(cabelo) has scripted another interesting tool for ports and emulators that require a lot of RAM. MicroMenu, a front-end to execute heavier ports without the need of Dmenu or Dinguxmb

To install, just replace the 'main' file on local/sbin. Check if the path and binary files are right (remember that on *nix systems the names are CaSeSeNsItIvE).
To choose, use DPAD and START.

To use other itens on MicroMenu just edit the main and set the right path/bin. You cant use any port that uses the file selector(like snes9x)

Cax releases mod of fMSX Dingux!

Cax (or borus) has modded ZX81’s MSX Port, enhancing it (see his site here):

27/01/2010 - My mod of Zx-81's Dingux port of Marat Fayzullin's fMSX:

I liked Zx-81's fMSX Dingux port very much, but it missed some features I needed myself.
So... Here is the list of modifications I made to fMSX-Dingux:

  • added full-screen up-scaling
  • added MegaROMs type auto-detection by SHA1 (so games like Aleste and Batman work now)
  • assigned "Exit" from menu to X button
  • first save state is loaded automatically on ROM opening
  • path to last opened rom/dsk is remembered after exiting from emulator
  • fixed "sound persists on state loading" bug
  • fixed gfx garbage in menu (manifests itself in full-screen mode)
  • fmpac.rom is not loaded after reset if "Music FM-PAC" is switched off in setting

Here is a binary patch for Dingux-MSX 1.1.0 :
Extract the zip file into local/emulators/dingux-msx folder overriding the existing files on your SD card.
Read the README.cax.txt file for the full info about this mod.
The modified source code can be downloaded here:

Thank you Cax!

Pawed and Unpawed Dingoos – Meneer Jansen tries to clear up the confusion

In a recent Dingoonity post worthy of parotting, Meneer Jansen summarises the state of Dingoo Hardware at the moment. This is well worth a read before you buy one:

Re: PAWED and UNPAWED Dingoos - Trying to clear up the confusion!

I'm getting sort of confused here.... (am I the only one?) So far I know that thare are quite a few models on the market.

  • Model I
The first Dingoo's on the market have a paw print on the back and have a serial number that starts with:
    4G <space> A320KBKxxxx
for a black (BK) model and with the letters "WT" in it for a white model. They have  4GB of internal memory, hance the "4G" in the serial. The serial on these models do not end in "HK" (for Hong Kong, even though they are produced in Hong Kong). Some report that these could still be ordered at Dealextreme in December 2009 and they were delivered in January 2010.
    These models are: good!
  • Model II
Then there were the models without the paw print on the back. Was there a serial on them? They have a slightly updated circuit board design: the two internal memory chips (amounting to 4 GB) were replaced by a single one of 4 GB. This resulted in the infamous memory allocation (malloc) errors -reported in these forums- that occured in certain homebrew applications (gameboy emulator for the native OS?). These malloc problems were solved eventually by upgraded of the homebrew applications.
These models are known to be: bad? good?
  • Model III
Then there were the models with a serial number that ends in "HK". They are cheap ones intended for the Asian/Chinese market. They are known to be sold by some sellers on eBay. Don't buy them. They have 4 GB of internal memory.
    They are: bad? good?
  • Model IV
They have no serial number. Amount of internal memory: 2 GB?? They do not have a paw print on the back? They are cheap ones intended for the Asian/Chinese market. They are known to be sold by some sellers on eBay. Don't buy them.
    They are: bad? good?
Could y'all help me out on the question marks? And do I have the models listed in the right chronological order?

If y’all can help out, please do!

Shadow Warrior + sound beta released:

Shadow Warrior + Sound Beta Released!
January 17,  2010

CongoZombie has released his port of Shadow Warrior and it ROCKS!!!!!

For those of you that don't know about Shadow Warrior here is a link to the WIKIPEDIA article.

I have been working on porting the most recent version of JFShadowWarrior from SVN to the Dingoo. I am away for a few days, so will be unable to create a new build until the end of the week, but people have been asking me to release the current build, so here it is.,0,0,0,3,251

-Sound works (yay!)

-I haven't disabled the mouse cursor yet, so it is still in the corner of the screen

-I'm not sure it is reading config files right (you have to remap the keys the first time that you play it)

- I have received reports from people that it sometimes crashes when loading levels. If this happens to you, let me know here which level, and which kernel and rootfs you are using.

I will release the source in a couple of days when I get back and will try and fix as many of the bugs as I can. I plan on implementing a similar control scheme to CZDoom to make it more playable on the Dingoo, as well as build a GP2X version.

Stella! Stella! – optimised v1.0 build for Dingux released

The tireless Slaanesh (that’s him in the pic) has released an optimised build of Stella for Dingux.

I was playing around with Stella for Dingux - but was getting a bit annoyed with some little problems. The default keymaps weren't very good and the build seemed a little slow. Selecting some options also seemed to crash the emulator.
So I decided to build my own version and share it around. It plays all my favorites at nice speed.
Pitfall II works but you will need to overclock to 420Mhz and it's still slow. What a beast!

Big thanks to the Stella developers, it's really is a great emulator - all these screen shots were taken using the built-in snapshot grabber.

Launcher and Menu Default Keymap
Up - Move up
Down - Move down
Left - Page Up (useful in the game select list)
Right - Page Down
(A) - Select
(B) - Cancel
(X) - Next Tab. You need this to navigate some of the menus!
Left Shoulder - Next menu/option item
Right Shoulder - Previous menu/option item (this doesn't work in the console menu).

Emulator Default Keymap
Up - Joystick up
Down - Joystick down
Left - Joystick left
Right - Joystick right
(A) - Joystick fire button
(B) - Not defined. I used it for snapshots.
(Y) - Console SELECT (usually select game number)
(X) - Console RESET (usually start game)
SELECT - Exit game, back to game selector.
Left Shoulder - Options
Right Shoulder - Console Menu

Install Default Directory
/usr/local/stella/roms - ROM directory
/usr/local/stella/screenshot - Screenshot directory
/usr/local/stella/state - State save directory

If you are updating from the previous build, delete your stellarc file first!

Dingoo internal speaker mod video

zer0zillion has posted a video of a Dingoo with speaker on steroids:

the dingoo A320 handheld is known for it's inferior internal *make your ears bleed* speakers... i modded them somewhat. game runs on gnuboy native 100% volume, i've choosen tetris as most know the theme and can relate to that. as far as judging the audio, it was recorded on a samsung nv24hd which has a very good internal mic imho.

Ezequeil posts Dingux PSX4ALL Bios script to ease your life

Ezequeil has posted a script to let you boot to different PS1 Bioses from Dmenu:

Based on this topic on the compatibility of the psx4all games:
The games have with a variety of bios possibles, thinking that I proposed to my friend who created a script that selects the bios (had seen something similar here to select of zImage)
The script makes the BIOS selectable dmenu, avoiding the hassle of having to connect the usb dingoo in every time you want to change bios
Understanding how the script:
must put the bios without the extension. bin folder (local/emulators/psx4all)
the extension is "scph7003.bin," be so scph7003.
soon after to put the bios of each script that you want to use that folder ...
How to script each bios:
Edit an existing bios and so change the following compound:
cd /usr/local/emulators/psx4all <---- where is the psx4all only change if it is not in this folder.
cp -f (nameofyourbios) SCPH1001.BIN <---- command to copy the bios which has (nameofyourbios) you should put the name of the bios that you will use without the extension. bin.
chmod +x psx4all; ./psx4all
the bios most famous are: (not included in the download)
Thanks to Vinicius (cabelo)
and Laaroy by testing and uploading files .

Thanks to our Brazillian brothers!

... and here's to a new decade of Dingoo!

Apologies for the lack of posts recently. I'm chilling out after the last ... 10 years:) and soaking in a bit of the festive season. Here's to another decade or so of playing games that are already ancient!

Normal transmission should be resuming soon, as soon as I'm back in the groove.
