Nethack for Dingux

Nethack for Dingux

May 22, 2012, 05:05:05 PM by qbertaddict

Nethack has been ported to Dingux!

NetHack is a single-player roguelike video game originally released in 1987. It is a descendant of an earlier game called Hack (1985), which is a descendant of Rogue (1980). Salon describes it as "one of the finest gaming experiences the computing world has to offer." NetHack is licensed under the NetHack General Public License.

Powder 1.7 for Dingux

Powder 1.7 for Dingux

May 22, 2012, 04:59:55 PM by qbertaddict

Powder has finally been ported to dingux!

To understand POWDER, you should first understand roguelikes. "Roguelike" is a term applied to a wide variety of games which share a common inspiration from the game Rogue. A non-exhaustive list of such games would be: ADOM, Nethack, Crawl, Diablo (I & II), Moria, and Angband. My apologies to the many excellent roguelikes I didn't list. What characterizes these games? The exact specifications are a matter of debate - indeed, I may receive hate mail for including Diablo - but I shall try to write a few:
Tactical play. The unit of action is based on the individual adventurer. The game is not twitch oriented (like Quake, rewarding reflexes & well trained actions) nor is it strategy oriented (like Civilizations or Warcraft, requiring working on the large picture)
Based in Hack and Slash. A roguelike isn't primarily about plot development or telling a story. It is about killing things and acquiring treasure.
Random games. A roguelike is a dungeon crawler where no two games are the same. The maps are different, the items are different, there are no guaranteed win paths.
Permadeath. You die, that is it. No restoring a savegame. Good roguelikes delete your save game after loading them. This is compensated by the replayability of the game.
Complex interactions of properties. While the commands for a roguelike are simple, the potential interactions are not. My favourite example is equipping a silver ring as a weapon in order to damage a creature vulnerable to silver, but not one's other weapons. [Editor: This matches the Hack branch of the roguelike tree, not the Angband branch]
Steam rolling monsters. If a critter is in your way, and weak, you shouldn't even notice it is there.

Who can resist?

Robert Broglia author of .emu emulators working on YDPG18 A10 sound bug (with a little help from

Robert Broglia, author of the great .emu android emulators, offered to work on fixing the YDPG18 sound bug, but he didn’t have a YDPG18:

I'm definitely interested in minimizing the audio latency to get the games running more like a real console which would definitely benefit a device like the YDPG18. I've made a list of programming tasks that will help with the sound issue:
*Re-write the core audio code with the OpenSL ES API (avoids the Android Java audio API and is all native code to eliminate any virtual machine overhead)
Variable audio buffer sizes to trade off lower latency versus less resilience to background apps causing dropped frames
Look at the underlying Android sound server code to see if any modifications may help (assuming the device is open to OS modifications)
Look at the audio driver code in the Linux kernel to see if any modifications may help (assuming the driver is open-source)
Another important factor is whether the device can maintain a constant 60fps under reasonable conditions (only basic background processes running like email notifications for example). CPU-wise all it takes is minimizing any CPU-intensive tasks so they don't run at the same time as the emulator. GPU-wise it can vary on how the driver is written. If there's any sudden CPU->GPU copying stall it can cause an intermittent frame drop which will make the sound skip if using a very low latency buffer.

Luckily, the nice guys from have now sent him one, and it should be with him soon.  Robert, good luck with your hunt for the sound bug – please keep us all posted on your progress!

Paulrom 0.2 for JXD S601 released

Another custom rom updated! Great work Paul!

[ROM] paulrom 0.2 (updated on 05/17/2012)

Here it is my custom rom, heavily based on the excellent work done by Skelton.
I've begun with his rom, deleted a couple of default apps (bluetooth support, default calc), edited build.prop to allow wifi sleep settings, added a custom boot animation and a whole bunch of emulators and apps.
The pack is quite huge but it contains almost everything I normally use. Please remember that the default language is set to Italian.
For the full details look here:
(translated from italian)

To download it (v0.1)

I hope you'll have fun!
Many thanks to Skelton for his work!

How to flash/ROOT/Overclock Tutorial For The JXD S601

Thanks again to qbertaddict for this great guide:

qbertaddict analyses soundlag on android devices

Ok here was a little experiment I preformed showing the lag on 3 android based devices. Two of the devices are PMP's from the companies JXD and Yinlips and the third device is a SAMSUNG Galaxy Nexus. When running SOME but not all emulators there seems to be a sound lag and the devices have been getting the blame. I have come to the conclusion that devices are not to blame. It seems to be a problem with either the Android OS itself or the emulators not handling sound synch correctly. I added a non-android device into the mix to show you how the game is supposed to sound.

Great work qbertaddict, this gives us all hope!
